Obituary for Sandra Schmidt

Sandra Marie (Hvezda) Schmidt lost her battle with COVID and passed on to heaven Friday, December 17, 2021. Sandra, or Sandy as she was known to family and friends, was born in Alexandria, Minnesota on January 30, 1946, the youngest of nine children. She grew up close to family and enjoyed the busyness of life on the farm. Sandy graduated Alexandria High in 1964 and attended secretary school. In 1967, she married her beloved Kardell Schmidt, husband for 54 years. Kardell and Sandy started their own family of three children in the Alexandria area, and then accepted an offer to relocate to Texas in 1981. The Schmidt family made Midlothian their home for the next 15 years. In 1996, Kardell and Sandy discovered a grand 18 acres in Woodbury, Texas and it became home for the last 25 years.

Sandy served as a first responder on the Woodbury Fire Department for several years and when unable to go on calls, continued to find ways to help out. Sandy was a great cook, avid quilter, devout Christian, but most of all, she was a treasured wife, mother, and grandmother. The lessons she learned from the farm benefitted her throughout life including: the value of hard work, the joy of a generous heart, and the pleasure in enjoying the simple things. She loved to gather with fellow quilters and women in the community regularly to share in prayer, friendship, and good conversation.

Sandy is survived by her husband Kardell Schmidt; children: Dawn Baker, Vance Schmidt (wife Kelly), Aimee Barker (husband Damon); grand-children: Travis, Dalton (wife Haylee), Jacee, Karlee (husband Cody), Colby; great-grandchildren: Cooper and another on the way. She is preceded in death by parents: Rueben and Elsie Hvezda; brothers: Ron, Tom, Nick; and sisters: Karolynn and Kay.

The memorial service to celebrate Sandy’s life will be held at 11 am on Monday, December 27th at Central Baptist Church in Hillsboro, Texas. Sandy will be interred to final rest in the family cemetery in Alexandria, Minnesota at a later, warmer date.
